Zany Zig Zag "Z"

Today is zzzzz end of our Alpha-bug project. It should be pretty easy to find your paper plate with the upper-case Z on it. Now you just need some crayons or colored pencils or markers to write zzzzzz's in row after row to fill in your zany Z. Hang it up at zzzz end of your Alpha-bug!One more great book to read before summer vacation ends is "Wild About Books" by Judy Sierra. It tells the story of what happens when a librarian accidentally drives her bookmobile into a zoo! Make some zookies to eat while you read . . . or to have on hand for after school snacking next week!

Happy zany Z-end of summer!

Wild Wiry "W"

Well, today is the day you can work on another part of your Alpha-Bug. Please pull out the paper plate with an upper-case W on the front of it. While you're at it, please pull out the baggie with a lower-case w inside it as well as some paper clips. Paper clips are made out of wire, so please slip those paper clips into slits on the paper plate W. Well, what do you know? Now you have a wild wiry "W" to add to your Alpha-Bug's winding body! Would you like to read a story now? "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak is a good story for wild little boys. Would you like to eat a worm? A real worm probaby doesn't sound so good. Maybe a gummy worm would be better. Or maybe a gummy worm in a dirt cup would be the best of all!

Have a wonderful, but not too wild, day!

Vegetable Vine "V"

It would be very nice if you could pull out your paper plate with an upper-case V on the front of it. It would be very nice if you could also pull out the baggie with a lower-case v inside of it. You will see some vegetable stickers and little green leaves to stick onto your upper-case V. With a green colored pencil or marker you could draw some vines, too. Then you will have a very nice vegetable vine "V" to add to your Alpha-Bug! "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle would be a very good book to read today. If it makes you very hungry, try making a veggie viper. Cut carrot and celery stalks into 1-inch pieces. Spread a little cream cheese at each sliced end and place the pieces end to end in a long coiled row on top of a lettuce leaf to form a snake. Add a cherry tomato for the head, and cut a forked tongue from a thin slice of carrot.

Have a very nice day!

Unusual Umbrella "U"

There's not many days left until school starts, so we better get busy finishing our Alpha-bug. First up today: find the paper plate with an upper-case U on front of it. Next find the little baggie with a lower-case u in it along with some colorful cupcake papers. Cut each cupcake paper in half and fold in half to form an umbrella top. Glue them onto the paper plate U and draw handles underneath each umbrella. Unfortunately, I don't own any picture books that start with the letter "U". Fortunately I do own a book called "Fortunately" by Remy Charlip which is about the good (fortunately) and bad luck (unfortunately) that accompanies a boy named Ned from New York to Florida on his way to a surprise party. Unfortunately, this is an older book and may be hard to find at the library. There may be this newer version called "Fortunately, Unfortunately" by Michael Foreman which is a story of a similar but sillier adventure.

Unfortunately, I can't find any great fun food ideas for the letter "U" but perhaps you could decorate yourself a "happy unbirthday" cupcake instead!

Happy Unbirthday!

Tiny Tissued "T"

It's time to take out the paper plate with an upper-case T on the front of it and the little baggie with a lower-case t. Inside that baggie are tiny tissue paper squares and a pencil. Why a pencil? That's doesn't start with a T. Let me tell you why. First put some glue on one tiny section of your upper-case T. Then wrap each tiny tissue paper square one at time around the eraser end of the pencil until it holds its shape. Push the tissue paper squares into the glue sticking them close together until the T is totally covered! Then it's time for "The Teddy Bears' Picnic", a song that has been made into a book by various illustrators. Maybe you would like to take your teddy bear (or any other stuffed animal) on a picnic today. Make some tiny sandwiches or even a sandwich on a stick and have some tasty fun!

Happy Teddy Bear Picnic!

Star-Spangled "S"

See how my Alpha-bug has grown so long it won't all fit in this photograph! Search for your paper plate with an upper-case "S" on the front of it. See if you can find the lower-case "s" baggie filled with stars. Stick stars all over your "S". . . hang it up it up . . . and soon your Alpha-bug will stretch out as long as mine! If you would like a simple snack now, try crispy cheese stars. Then search for the silly ducks in the cute book, "Splish Splash Splat!"by Rob Scotten.

Hope you're having a super splish splashy summer!

Quirky Q-tipped "Q"

Look for your paper plate with an upper-case Q on the front of it. Find your little baggie with a lower-case q inside as well as a lot of Q-tips. Cover your paper plate Q with Q-tips. You may need to cut a few Q-tips into smaller sizes to fit more onto the paper plate Q. Now for a quick treat idea! Well, first a question: do you have either a tube of crescent rolls or biscuits in your refrigerator? If you have some cresent rolls, you can make quick turnovers. Separate the dough into triangle pieces and fill each triangle with jelly or apple slices or cinnamon sugar. Roll up and bake as you would crescent rolls. If you have some biscuits, you can make quick doughnuts. Cut a hole in the middle of each biscuit dough circle. Fry in one inch of oil for one minute or so. Shake in a bag of brown or powdered sugar. Then nibble on them while you read "Little Quack" by Lauren Thompson.

Happy quacky day!

Pretty Pom Pom "P"

Please pull out your paper plate with an upper-case P on it. Pull out the little baggie filled with purple pom poms and the lower-case p. Glue the pom poms onto your P paper plate and put it up on the wall with the rest of your Alpha-bug.Now perhaps you or a parent could read "The Little Red Hen (makes a pizza)" while you eat a smiley face pizza for lunch.

Have a perfect pizzalicious day!

Oodles of "O"s

Oh, boy! You can pull out the paper plate with an upper-case O on the front of it now. And you can also pull out the little baggie with a lower-case o inside it along with alot of o-shaped cereal. Fill up your O with oodles of any o-shaped cereal like cheeri-Os or fruit loops. Maybe you can munch on a few cheeri-Os or fruit loops while you read "Oh, Were They Ever Happy!"by Peter Spier. This colorful story may inspire you to create something colorful. (Please don't paint your house) String fruit loops into a necklace or make a fruit loop rainbow instead.

Of course, have oodles of fun today!

Nicely Numbered "N"

It would be very nice of you to locate your paper plate with an upper-case letter N on the front of it . . . as well as the little baggie with a lower-case letter n and several number stickers inside. You may have noticed I just stuck number stickers all over my letter N and you can do the same. Then you can make a number salad! You will need 1 handful of coconut . . . 2 tablespoons of orange juice concentrate . . . 3 orange segments . . . 4 apple slices . . . 5 cheese cubes . . . 6 banana slices . . . 7 melon balls . . . and 8 grapes. Stir them all together 9 times and eat! If you are still looking for something to do today or later this summer, please read "Now What Can I Do?" by Margaret Park Bridges.

Have a nice day now!

Marvelous macaroni "M"

Man, my Alpha-bug is so long is barely fits in this picture. How about yours? Find your paper plate with an upper-case M on it. Then find a little baggie with a lower-case m and lots of macaroni noodles inside. You can make the middle of your Alpha-bug by covering the upper-case M with macaroni noodles. After you hang it up, you will be officially halfway done making this Alpha-bug which is a good thing since summer is halfway over! Maybe you would like to read this funny book today: "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" by Laura Numeroff. Maybe it will cause you to be hungry for muffins. You could make some if your Mom helps you . . . or you could have a muffin tin meal!

Merry muffin-tin day!

Lovely lacey "L"

Let's look for a paper plate with a large (upper-case) L on the front of it. Let's also look for a little baggie filled with lace and a little (lower-case) l. After covering the large letter L with lace, would you like to look at a ladybug book?""The Grouchy Ladybug" by Eric Carle is a story about a ladybug and all the creatures she encounters at different times throughout the day while she looks for a little something to eat. After (or for) lunch, you might like to create and eat your own little ladybug fruit snack!

Have a lovely little day!

Love, Grandma

P.S. Don't forget to try your luck at the little guessing game.

Krazy kissed "K"

Would you be so kind as to find your paper plate with an upper-case K on the front of it and the little baggie with a lower-case k in it. You may think this is crazy, but I put lipstick on and filled my K with kisses. Just in case you don't want to do that, I gave you candy kisses to glue onto your K. However, maybe you could talk your kind and loving mother into kissing your K, then you could both eat the candy kisses! After you add the letter K to your Alpha-bug, you can read all about what kids are like . . . what kids do . . . what's in a kid's pocket . . . everything you ever wanted to know about kids like you in the book, "Kids" by Catherine and Laurence Anholt. And you can make Rice Krispie treats for a snack. If you want to get crazy, you can cut them into skinny rectangles, insert a stick and make Rice Krispie popsicles!

Have a kinda krazy krispie day!

Jolly Jeweled "J"

It's just about time to go find your upper-case J plate and the little baggie with a lower-case j and some shiny little things inside. We pretending the shiny little things are jewels. Stick them onto the letter J, and draw little sparkle lines by the "jewels" if you wish. You might enjoy making some jello jigglers today. While they set up, you could read a book about a little boy who jumps into a storybook and his little sister follows him . "Come Back, Jack" is the jolly good book by Catherine and Laurence Anholt. When your jigglers are ready, cut them into cubes and put them into a small cup or bowl that has cool whip swirled around the bottom and sides. This treat is called "rainbow in a cloud" and was a favorite snack of your Mommies when they were little girls.

Have a jolly jello jiggly day!

Happy Hearty "H"

Hello little alpa-buggers! Can you put your hands on your paper plate with an upper-case H on it and the little baggie filled with paper and sticker hearts? Then you will be ready to glue or stick hearts all over your upper-case H."My Heart is Like a Zoo" by Michael Hall is a cute book that shows clever ways to create all kinds of animals out of heart shapes. Maybe you could create some, too, after looking at that book. Not only that, but you can create a heart-shaped snack from a hot dog if you feel like it!

Have a happy hearty day!

Fancy Flowered "F"

Do you feel like making more Alpha-Bug today? Then find the paper plate with an upper-case letter F on the front of it; and find a little baggie filled with flowers and the lower-case letter f. Cover the paper plate F with the little flowers. When you're finished, hang it up with the rest of your Alpha-Bug! Have you figured out where my Alpha-Bug is hanging? Now, just for fun, make a fruit flower. Place a kiwi slice (or any roundish fruit) on the center of a plate. Arrange slices of bananas, strawberries, or other fruit around the center to look like a daisy. Make a stem with little blueberries. . . or be super fancy and make flower pot sundaes to feast on while someone reads you a flowery story like "Alison's Zinnia" by Anita Lobel.

Have a fabulously fun day!

Easy Eggshell "E"

If you have enough energy, look in your summer sack for the upper-case E paper plate and the little baggie holding a lower-case e and some colorful crushed eggshells. Ask your Mom to help you cover a section of the letter E with glue. Then stick on the eggshells. Continue until the entire E is covered! If it is easier, you can crush your own clean, dry plain white eggshells between two pieces of waxed paper and then paint them with water colors after you have glued them onto the letter E. All those eggshells have probably made you hungry for an egg, right? Would you like to eat a boiled, fried, scrambled, or deviled egg? Or how about hard-boiled egg mice? If eggs sound ekky to you, maybe you will find something tastier in "Eating the Alphabet" by Lois Ehlert.

Enjoy an "egg"ceptional day!

Darling Dotted "D"

Are you ready to do the letter D for your Alpha-Bug? Then pull out the paper plate with an upper-case D on the front of it and find the baggie with a lower-case d inside. You may be wondering why there is nothing but a pencil (which does not start with the letter D) in that baggie. That pencil is actually a dot-maker and this is how it works:

Ask your Mom to pour a thin layer of craft paint onto another paper plate. Dip the eraser end of the pencil into the paint, then press onto the letter D plate. Do this over and over to create polka dots! You can use any color or as many colors of paint as you want.

Isn't that darling?

Go hang it up with the rest of your Alpha-bug and then you might look at the library for a book called "Lots of Dots" by Craig Frazier. If you look closely, you might discover that buttons are dots . . . that wheels are dots . . . that ladybugs have dots . . . and that there are dots all around you!

Look at the grocery store for Dippin' Dots ice cream or make a polka-dot pizza for lunch. Take one small bagel half or one-half English muffin and spread it with tomato or pizza sauce. Slice a hot dog and string cheese into "dots" and top the pizza. Bake or broil in the oven until the cheese melts.

Have a delightful dotty day!

Cozy Cottonball "C"

It's time to pull out the upper-case C paper plate from your summer sack and the lower-case c baggie containing some cottonballs. If you're feeling creative, you can color the upper-case C before you glue on the cozy cottonballs. Then hang it up with the rest of your Alpha-bug. Can you guess where my Alpha-bug is currently hanging out?
A nice book to read today would be "A Day with No Crayons" by Elizabeth Rusch. You can find out what happens to a little girl when her Mom takes away her crayons for a day! Then if you're still feeling creative, you could jazz up a summer drink with some cool cubes!

To make cool cubes, put a piece of fruit (strawberries . . . melon balls . . . lemon, lime or orange slices) in each section of an ice cube tray. Pour juice over the fruit and freeze until firm. Serve in a summer drink.

Have a cool creative day!

Bumpy Button "B"

Before you begin making the next body part for your Alpha-bug, how about making some banana pops for a little later. While that treat is freezing, find your summer sack and pull out the paper plate with an upper-case B on the front of it. Then pull out the little baggie with a lower-case b inside along with a lot of colorful buttons. Glue the bumpy buttons onto the upper-case B and hang your finished "B" body part next to your Alpha-bug's head and "A" body part. And before you tell your Mom that now you are bored, look at the Gyo Fujikawa's book "Oh, What a Busy Day!" for plenty of ideas of things to do.

Have a beautiful busy day!
