Ww is for Words and W_ _ _

Words . . . words . . . wonderful words.
There's a lot of things you can do with words in a
doodle book . . . Cut words out of a magazine
and glue them on a page--maybe one for each
letter of the alphabet . . .

Look in the dictionary and find and write one favorite word
for each letter of the alphabet . . . or write new words you
discover as you are reading any book.

A few good "word" books:
This book has only words and is best if read aloud.

The students in this book are given an assignment
to choose three words for each letter of the alphabet
and write them into a sentence--26 sentences in all!
You could do that in your doodle notebook, but
it might feel too much like homework.

And this book has lots and lots of words
and lots and lots of pictures!

Last, but not least, here are six words that
describe favorite things of a certain someone
who is turning six years old today  . . .
whales . . . maps . . . ocean

. . . legos . . . piano . . . green

Happy Birthday Wade!

Find a Christmas W

Gloomy Mr. Jonathan Toomey was a
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
who became a much happier man after he created
a nativity set for the widow McDowell and her son, Thomas.

If you don't have this book and can't figure out the
word-of-the-day, maybe you will need to visit me
and read my copy of this great Christmas book.

Reading W's

My wagon is full of "W"onderful books like
"Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak
"Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White
and "Old McDonald Had a Workshop"
which is a twist on the song "Old Mcdonald Had a Farm"!

The "Whatever After" series of cute chapter books are about
a sister (Abby) and a brother (Jonah) who jump into a magic
mirror and visit fairy tales like Snow White in "Fairest of All"
. . . Cinderella in "If the Shoe Fits" . . .  the Little Mermaid in
"Sink or Swim" . . . and Rapunzel in "Bad Hair Day".

Another fun series of chapter books are "Weird School"
books by Dan Gutman like "Miss Daisy is Crazy" . . .
"Mr. Klutz is Nuts" . . . "Ms. Hannah is Bananas" . . .
"Mrs. Yonkers is Bonkers!"

Perhaps your Moms remember this weird book,
"When the Wind Changed" and would love to
read it to you sometime!?

But, of course, you could read about many other
things like the weather . . .wheels . . . witches . . .
the world . . . Winnie-the-Pooh . . . or books
written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I remember my 5th grade teacher reading our class
"The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Graham,
but I sure couldn't remember anything about it. So that is
one more library book I found and read this summer.

Whatever you read, have a wonderful day!

Halloween Ww

Ww is for witch

What do witches put in their hair?
(scare spray)
Why do witches fly on brooms?
(Vacuum cleaners are too heavy)
What is a witch's favorite subject in school?
(spelling)
How does a witch tell time?
(she uses a witch watch)
What does a witch do on Saturday night?
(boo-gie)
What do you call a witch who lives by the sea?
(sand-witch)
How do you make a witch scratch?
(take away her "w")

While you're wondering about the answers,
try reading a few bewitching books listed
 on Grandma's Alpha-Halloween Pinterest board!

Happy October!

Ww Treat-of-the-Day

Try this treat idea to take with you on your next walk!

Find an individual bag of chips like doritos or fritos or sun chips.
Squeeze the bag a little to crush the chips slightly.
Then add taco meat and the fixings of your choice
such as grated cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, etc.
Grab a fork and go for a walk!

Happy Yummy Summer Reading!

Disneyland Ww

If you would like to take a trip around the w _ _ _ _,
you can do that at Disneyland!

While on this trip you'll just have to listen to a little tune called
"It's a Small W_ _ _ _" sung over and over in many different languages.

Ww is for Weather

Welcome March!

The weather in March is described as "in like a lion and out like a lamb". It sometimes begins with lionlike roars of winter and gradually quiets down like a lamb as spring gets nearer. Welcome this brand new month and read a windy weather book . . . or watch out your window to see what the weather in your neck of the woods is doing . . . or look for lions lurking somewhere on this blog.

Happy windy reading, weather watching and lion looking!

Ww is for Winter Wonderland Week

January is a winter wonderland

Because there are so many wonderful things to do in the wintertime, I thought I would give you some simple suggestions . . . one-a-day . . . each day this week!

Last Day:
Go on a winter walk and "I spy with your little eye" looking for
something white . . . someone wearing mittens . . .
a bare branch tree . . . someone wearing a hat . . . a pine tree . . .
your breath . . . a snow (or tumbleweed) man!

Day Six:
Guess how many "snowballs" I made and win a cool prize!

Day Five:
Make a snowman.
You can make miniature snowmen with a little bit of snow . . . a silly snowman sack . . . a craft stick snowman . . . "Frosty Friends" . . . "Frosty the Bagel" . . . fruity snowmen on a stick . . . egg carton snowmen . . . toilet paper tube snowmen . . . or even a paper snowman!

Day Four:
Sip some snowman soup--which is hot chocolate sprinkled
with mini marshmallows and stirred with a candy cane.
(Snowman mug optional)

Day Three:
Snuggle under a quilt and read some snowy stories

Day Two:
Eat a snowman for breakfast!
Day One:
Sing a snowman song such as "Frosty the Snowman"
or "Once There Was a Snowman"
Happy Winter Wonderland Week!

Ww is for White

January is white

(sometimes)

It snowed Saturday!

It was so fun to wake up to white covering everything in sight,

I thought you might like to celebrate the color white by

having a white day sometime this month.

You could wear a white shirt, shoes and socks . . . you could be happy you don't have to wear a white shirt 6 out of 7 days a week like Grandpa . . . you could eat all kinds of white food like marshmallows, milk, mashed potatoes, popcorn, vanilla ice cream and powdered donette gems . . . you could fold a piece of plain white paper and cut it into a snowflake . . . you could create a "white" collage in Chapter Ww of your Alpha-Book . . . you could play in something white--either snow or bubble bath bubbles . . . or you could go on a "white elephant" hunt. A white elephant is a toy you no longer want or any other silly item. If you find one, wrap it up, and the next time all the cousins get together we could have a "white elephant" gift exchange.

Have a wonderful white day!

Ww is for Wreaths

W is for wreaths with pinecones and berry

Oh, dear! The wreath in this picture has neither pinecones nor holly berries. I hope you do a better job creating a wreath in your Merry Christmas books. Or maybe you would like to create an edible wreath treat!

Merry two days before Christmas!!

Wild Wiry "W"

Well, today is the day you can work on another part of your Alpha-Bug. Please pull out the paper plate with an upper-case W on the front of it. While you're at it, please pull out the baggie with a lower-case w inside it as well as some paper clips. Paper clips are made out of wire, so please slip those paper clips into slits on the paper plate W. Well, what do you know? Now you have a wild wiry "W" to add to your Alpha-Bug's winding body! Would you like to read a story now? "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak is a good story for wild little boys. Would you like to eat a worm? A real worm probaby doesn't sound so good. Maybe a gummy worm would be better. Or maybe a gummy worm in a dirt cup would be the best of all!

Have a wonderful, but not too wild, day!

Ww is for Wade

Wonder who Ww is for . . . ?
Who has light-colored curly hair?
Who has chubby little hands that like to put little toys
from one place to another in orderly little rows?
Who has one favorite word that means
at least 100 different things? Huh?
Who just moved back to Utah?
Who loves to climb up the steps of one Grandma's house
dragging all kinds of things with him?
Who loves to hide toys in drawers all over the place
in another Grandma's house?
Who was born exactly one week after someone else you know?
Who will be a big (all two feet of him) brother soon?

Guess who "Ww is for . . . " and tell me your favorite thing about this mystery person and win a ticket to shop in the Xbox. Draw a picture or glue a photo of this person in Chapter Ww of your Alpha-Book and earn another ticket.

Happy "Wonder Who" Wednesday!

Ww is for Willowby

"Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree" is the cutest story ever about a too tall tree and what Mr. Willowby decides to do about it. But, I believe Jack's tree decorated with super heroes is the cutest little tree ever . . . even cuter than Miss Adelaide's tree and Timm's tree and Barnaby Bear's tree and Frisky Fox's tree and Benjamin Rabbit's tree and Mistletoe Mouse's tiny tip of a Christmas tree. I'm sure you all love the Christmas trees at your house just as much so why not have a slumber party under the tree tonight.
Merry sleeping under your wonderful tree!

Ww is for Witch

This seems like a wonderful week to write about witches. Here you see four of my favorite witches. Once upon a time, at one Halloween or another, all my girls have dressed up as witches. Can you believe these witches grew up to be your cute mommies and aunts?
While you're waiting to go trick-or-treating, here is a list of four of my favorite "witch" books you might like to read:
1. Winnie the Witch by Korky Paul and Valerie Thomas
2. Little Witch's Big Night by Deborah Hautzig
3. Room on a Broom by Julia Donaldson
4. A Job for Wittilda by Caralyn and Mark Buehner
Best "witches" for a Happy Halloween!

Ww is for Worm

If you are looking for more creepy creature reading this week, try a silly book called "Diary of a Worm". Doreen Cronin wrote this book and "Diary of a Spider" and "Diary of a Fly".

And if all that reading makes you as hungry as a caterpillar, try making some wiggle worms or creeping caterpillars for a snack!

Have a Wwwwonderful week!
