Find a Christmas J

"Who hangs with the bow and the mistletoe?
_ _ _ _ _ _ bugs winging to and fro."

If you don't have a copy of Wade's book to read,
try singing the song that starts:
"Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh . . ."
and then you'll know the word-of-the-day when you
get to the "bells" part!

Reading J's

During July you might enjoy reading "The Jungle Book"
or about "Jobs People Do" or "The Jolly Postman".
Joke books would be jolly reading for the letter "J"
as would books of jump rope jingles!

I just discovered a new picture book this summer
called "Extraordinary Jane" who is an ordinary dog
in an extraordinary circus. This sweet story is by
Hannah E. Harrison.

I also read  "James and the Giant Peach" by good
ole Roald Dahl. Maybe you would like to read and/or
watch this, too . . . or maybe you would enjoy the
"Jigsaw Jones" mystery series by James Preller or the
books about Judy Moody or Junie B. Jones. You could
read about "John, Paul, George, and Ben" or you could
read all kinds of Jack books including Jack Sparrow
pirate books by Rob Kidd.

Just enjoy reading!

Halloween Jj

Jj is for Jack-o-lantern
As you all know, a pumpkin with a face
carved in it is called a jack-o-lantern

And you may also know that last year a girl
named Lindsay Lu was dressed up as a jack-o-lantern.

But what do you call a fat jack-o-lantern?

Happy riddle solving in October!

Jj Word-of-the-Day

Someday you might go to an office . . . or a hotel . . .
  or a school . . . or a warehouse . . . or a workshop . . . or a store
and do a job like your Dads, Moms, Grandpas or Grandmas
do now.  Learn about all kinds of jobs from books like:

"Bear at Work"
by Stella Blackstone

a board book called
"Hello Kitty What Will I Be A to Z?"

or a big book called
"Jobs People Do"

Earn a bonus reading "scoop" by telling
me what job you might like to do when you grow up?

Happy Yummy Summer Reading!

Jj is for Just About Over January

Congratulations to Jack who made the best (and only) guess of how many snowballs I made during Winter Wonderland Week (I really made 32) . . . and congratulations to Eddy who made creative although incorrect guesses about Jack's favorites . . . and congratulations to Hayley (and Betsy) who guessed what the twelve photo collage represented. You are the lucky winners of snowmen treats! But wait . . . there's still time for more winners!

During January did you make snowy art on your calendar . . . eat a snowman pancake for breakfast . . . celebrate the year of the Dragon . . . find a white elephant . . . play Grandma's snowball guessing game . . . have any new happy holidays . . . play "I spy" on a winter walk . . . jump for joy on Jack's birthday . . . know that today is "Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day" . . . learn to make a different kind of snowman . . . wear mittens . . . make some noise on New Year's Eve . . . eat some oatmeal . . . read a poem . . . snuggle under a quilt and read some snowy stories . . . sip some soup . . . see a tumbleweed snowman . . . draw Utah and mark with an X the place you live . . . eat a vegetable . . . wear or eat something white . . . figure out what year of the Chinese Zodiac you were born? Write one letter of the alphabet on each square of your calendar for each alphabet adventure you had this month! And get ready to turn the page in one more day!

Happy just about over January!

Jj is for January

January is the beginning of a brand new year!

And that brand new year begins at midnight tonight! Ask Mom and Dad if they will let you stay up late tonight. At the stroke of midnight you can welcome in the new year by making alot of noise by banging on pots and pans . . . or by blowing noisemakers . . . or by yelling "Happy New Year" . . . or by listening outside for noises like fireworks going off. Oh yes, and don't forget to hang up your new calendar!

Happy New Year!

J is for Jack

Congratulations on the great job you all did building an Alpha-Bug this summer. Your tickets will be coming soon and so will Grandma's X-Box Shop! For now, would you take just a minute to guess what the letter "J" might be hiding . . .

1. Who turned 5 years old in January and just

started kindergarten last week?

2. Who jumped into a pool one day this summer

and just suddenly knew how to swim?

3. Who sleeps in a top bunk bed?

4. Who has just one little brother right now?

5. Who will have one new baby brother in October?

6. Who loves to build with legoes and draw with

markers and crayons and is just so creative?

Guess who "Jj is for . . ." then tell me your favorite thing about this mystery person and win a bonus ticket! Draw a picture or glue a photograph in Chapter Jj of your Alpha-Book, too!

Just have a jolly day!

Jolly Jeweled "J"

It's just about time to go find your upper-case J plate and the little baggie with a lower-case j and some shiny little things inside. We pretending the shiny little things are jewels. Stick them onto the letter J, and draw little sparkle lines by the "jewels" if you wish. You might enjoy making some jello jigglers today. While they set up, you could read a book about a little boy who jumps into a storybook and his little sister follows him . "Come Back, Jack" is the jolly good book by Catherine and Laurence Anholt. When your jigglers are ready, cut them into cubes and put them into a small cup or bowl that has cool whip swirled around the bottom and sides. This treat is called "rainbow in a cloud" and was a favorite snack of your Mommies when they were little girls.

Have a jolly jello jiggly day!

Jj is for Jolly

I just love to get Christmas cards, packages and other surprises in the mailbox at Christmastime. Do you, too? Well then, you're in luck. "The Jolly Christmas Postman" delivers holiday mail to nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters in this book. And the mail is included right in the book. So you can peek inside the envelopes and see all kinds of holiday mail--even a puzzle you can put together. Have a . . .

Merry Jolly Good Day!

Jj is for Jam

I just realized July is virtually over and I have lots of letters to go before summer ends . . . so I better get jumping.
"Jamberry" is a book about a boy and a rhyme-spouting bear romping through a world of berries. "What a jam jamboree!" they have. It makes me hungry for a jam sandwich so I think I'll go get a snack!
Have a Jjjjjolly good day!

Jj is for Jellybeans and Jello

Spring has sprung.
Easter has come.
Just in case you have any jellybeans left over
from your Easter basket, try this fun project:
Write you name in big letters on a piece of paper first.
Lay jellybeans (or M&Ms, fruit loops, or any other tiny treat)
onto the letters to "spell" a sweet name
or:
Sprinkle jello powder onto a plate or shallow pan.
With your finger, write your name in the powder.
Lick your fingers when you're finished of course.
Have a jolly good "Jj" day!
