Reading P's

Plenty of possibilities abound for letter "P" reading:
books about pigs . . . pigeons . . . penguins . . . pirates . . .
princesses . . . even little green peas in
"LMNO Peas" and "1-2-3- Peas"
plus peek-a-boo books . . . "Parts!"
. . . Pinkalicious" . . . "Purplicious"
and "A Porcupine Named Fluffy".

Puppy poems A-Z can be found in "Name That Dog"
by Peggy Archer. Nursery rhymes A-Z can be found
"In a Pumpkin Shell" illustrated by JoanWalsh Anglund.

A picture book with possibly the most "P" words
and pictures you can imagine is "Pigs in Pajamas"
by Maggie Smith--a story that also rhymes!

Perhaps you would prefer to read
"Pixarpedia" (an encyclopedia of characters from
Pixar movies) . . . or "Peter and the Starcatchers"
by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson which  is a prequel
series about the Peter Pan stories by J.M. Barrie.

The book I picked to read was by Jeanne Birdsall--
"The Penderwicks--A Summer Tale of Four Sisters,
Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy".

Please have a pleasant day reading!

Pp Treat-of-the-Day

Pizza makes a pretty good breakfast, lunch, dinner or treat!
Perhaps you would like to make one today . . .

You could make a paper pizza with cardboard
and crayons and bits of colored paper.

But a smiley face pizza made out of dough, sauce,
cheese and pepperoni might taste a little better.

And, if you need any other pointers,  please read
"The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza"
retold by Philemon Sturges

Merry 14 days before Christmas

I spy with my little eye
an itty bitty bit of Christmas
that starts with the letter P
P _ _ _ _ _

Hint: Grandpa and I like to put together things
like this especially at Christmas time!
You can use old leftover pieces to create
cute crafts, too . . . like this.

Our first port of call on our European cruise was a place called Ponta Delgada.

which are about 800 miles off the coast of Portugal.
Guess what grows in the rich, volcanic fields there:
a. pumpkins
b. pineapples
c. petunias
d. pomegranates

Pp is for Poetry

April is Poetry Month

Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you'll never feel lonely
At night when you're in bed.

The little poem will sing to you
The little picture bring to you
A dozen dreams to dance to you
At night when you're in bed.

So--
Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you'll never feel lonely
At night when you're in bed.
(by Beatrice Schenk deRegniers)

Perhaps you can find a nice poem to read tonight
either in a good book or at Jack Prelutsky's website.

Happy Poem in Your Pocket Day!

Pp is for Presidents

February is a Presidential Month

George Washington, the very first President of the United States, was born on February 22. You can see his picture on one dollar bills. Abraham Lincoln, a later President of the United States, was born on February 12. You can see his picture on pennies. Now we have an official holiday on the third Monday in February to remember all the Presidents of the United States. Why not go on a money hunt today and see if you can find the face of any other Presidents.

Happy Presidents Day!

Pp is for Presents

P is for presents wrapped up very tight

I finally wrapped a few presents this week. And guess what? There might be something for you underneath my Christmas tree (except for Jack and Ryan, whose presents are underneath their own tree!)

Merry 9 days before Christmas!

Pp is for Pencils

Pencils are handy dandy tools for many projects. Here are three you might like to try:

1. With a plain or colored pencil write the entire alphabet on any page in your Alpha-book. Write the date, too. Then at the end of the school year, write the alphabet again and see how much your handwriting has changed!

2. Make pencil toppers!

3. Chew on your pencil! Not your writing pencil, silly. . . a cheese stick pencil!

Happy Pencil Project day!

P.S. Jack . . . Thank you for reading this blog and answering all my silly questions. You definitely deserve extra tickets!

Pretty Pom Pom "P"

Please pull out your paper plate with an upper-case P on it. Pull out the little baggie filled with purple pom poms and the lower-case p. Glue the pom poms onto your P paper plate and put it up on the wall with the rest of your Alpha-bug.Now perhaps you or a parent could read "The Little Red Hen (makes a pizza)" while you eat a smiley face pizza for lunch.

Have a perfect pizzalicious day!

Pp is for Polar Express

One morning this summer I rode a train in Alaska. Because it was so early, we went down to the dining car and ate breakfast. When the waiter brought us some hot chocolate, I thought how fun it would be if we were on the Polar Express with singing and dancing waiters! But since the Polar Express probably won't be stopping by our houses any Christmas Eve soon, try the next best thing and read "The Polar Express" by Chris Van Allsburg . . . or put on your pajamas and pretend you're on the Polar Express while you watch the movie.

Merry pajama day!

Pp is for Pink

I know this blog has been mostly for and about little boys.
I know that summer is nearing an end and I've haven't
finished all the alphabet picture book posts I had planned.
But I believe the birth of my very first granddaughter is
the perfect occasion to pause for a moment and
think pink!
Pink is the color of cotton candy . . . bubble gum . . .
and babies, especially little girls.
Pink represents sugar and spice and everything nice.
I happen to love pink popcorn, lemonade, grapefruit, salmon
and strawberry and Bear Lake Raspberry ice cream.
I don't care so much for spam which is Grandpa's favorite pink food.
Many flowers are pink-- even blossoms on some trees in spring.
When your mommys were little girls they ate a tiny
pink pill every morning to keep their teeth strong.
Once upon a time I lived in a pink mansion in the avenues.
I have a pink winter coat, pink raincoat, a pair of pink shoes,
and lots of cute pink stuff in my craft room.
You boys may not think you have anything pink,
but look at the littlest finger on each of your hands.
You have pinkies!
Celebrate the birth of your newest cousin
by reading "Pinkalicious" . . .
eating a pink cookie or cupcake . . .
watching a princess movie . . .
or Strawberry Shortcake cartoon . . .
and/or making a pretty pink page
in Chapter Pp of your alpha-book.
Welcome to the world Lindsay Lu!
Love, your tickled pink Grandma

Pp is for Peas

The best way to eat peas is fresh from the garden. Pick a pod . . . pop it open and count the little peas inside . . . then pluck them one by one into your mouth. We just pulled up our pea patch because they stopped growing now that it's so hot.
However, there are much cuter peas to peruse in the picture book "LMNO Peas" by Keith Baker. It is an alphabet book featuring "pea"ple doing all kinds of jobs like "acrobats, artists, and astronauts in space, builders, bathers and bikers in a race". I think it is such a creative book, I'm putting it on my Christmas wish list.
Have a Ppppleasant day!
Love, Grandma
P.S. . . . How many puzzle pieces have you glued in your Alpha-Book so far this summer? Count them up and tell me so I know how many mid-summer prizes to send your way!

Pp is for Puzzles

Grandpa and I love to do puzzles. We did our first puzzle together just before the Christmas we got engaged. Now we have a colorful collection of over 70 puzzles in the top of our closet. But they don't just sit there collecting dust. We have put together most of our puzzles at least twice . . . and some puzzles, like the Christmas ones, many times.

Once upon a time 1,000 pieces ended up on the floor after an unexpected little person visited. But so far, we haven't lost many pieces.

Just for fun I have a puzzle project for you this summer.
The next time I see you I will give you a little present with 52 puzzle pieces inside. Each time I post an alphabet activity this summer, look for the puzzle piece with the same letter and the matching picture puzzle piece. Color and glue the puzzle pieces in the matching chapter of your Alpha-Book.

Happy puzzle piecing!
